Miss Lumpton

What do you think Phil wants to ask Miss Lumpton? What do you think will happen in the next book?

The Great Task

Nate is left alone to complete a task that he has never done before. He has to complete this task entirely on his own with no guidance. Why do you feel Nate was so compelled to succeed at this task?

Greasle

Phil describes Greasle as a pest. But, Nate keeps Greasle around. Why do you think he decides not to discard Greasle? Is it pity? Guilt? Explain why you feel the way you do.

"Harrowing" Situation

In chapter 5, Phil asks Nate to do something quite outside of his comfort zone. What are some words that come to mind that describe how Nate was feeling when his task was set? When you respond, try to think of very interesting words - maybe not words you would typically use.

For example, if I wanted to describe Nate as being happy, I could use the following words in place of happy:

content
pleased
blissful
exultant
ecstatic
delighted

Use a thesaurus if you need help.

Communication

Have you ever been in a situation where you were with other people that did not speak English? How did you communicate with them if you did not speak their language either?

Transportation

In Chapter 4, Phil and Nate are to take a long flight in Sopwith Platypus. What can you find out about this plane?

Phil also mentions that this plane was very useful in the "Great War". Which war is she talking about? When did it take place? Who were the countries involved in this war?

Memories

At the end of Chapter 3, Nate tries to remember his parents, but can only remember certain features. Memories do have a way of fading over time. What is your first memory? Try to think back as far as you can. What do you remember from your early childhood? What details can you recall?
